Preemptive Strike
Preemptive Strike is the largest database of military facilities in the world. They asked me and my team to help them and try to further elaborate their original idea about the project.
Project Goal
The aim of this project is to present a vast database of military facilities around the world in a transparent way.
There is multilayer filtering, selection of country or countries and their military units, as well as the choice of facility type. Also, a user can easily see the inventory of a particular facility.
Target Group
The target group consists of journalist, non-government organisations, nonviolent organisations and also representatives of military data experts across the globe.
Creating Wireframe
Before we started creating wireframes, all the ideas and suggestions by the clients and user testers were taken and shaped, formed in the UI trough UX process. We have decided to make at least two versions of pages, forms, info windows, map markers, to make sure what is the most suitable for the user.
User flow was already determined and proved to be correct.
Survey & Key Notes from Users
As agreeded with the client, a group of 5 people was selected, who after reviewing the material, sent their comments.
Here, we will focus on website navigation. Why vertical navigation is better in this case than horizontal navigation?
Because it allows users to focus on the map and displayed data, opposite to horizontal map with dropdown menus and blocking their attention from the map.
Prototype Testing
In this part of case study we will not cover all the parts of the final prototype testing, so in the following image, map marker A/B test will show interesting point of view, when we use rich markers or regular ones.
We noticed, and users had the same feedback, that with flat markers, they could not remember which facilities they opened and which they did not opened. So at the end we decided to use rich markers. It was harder to implement them, but they were necessary from our perspective.
Conclusion
We managed to upgrade their basic idea and to created an MVP product that is very easy to use from a user perspective. It was a challenge to organize database that is very complex, and to implement it in UI, so that everything can be user friendly.
